Metrotopia: Bridging the Gap Between Public and Private Transportation

A Futuristic Design by Simon Colabufalo

Inspired by the need to address gaps in a city's public transportation system

Metrotopia is a groundbreaking research project by designer Simon Colabufalo that aims to develop a vehicle that bridges the gap between public and private transportation systems. This innovative concept provides individuals with the freedom to drive around their local neighborhood while also offering the option to dock with a specially designed tram for longer and faster journeys.

What sets Metrotopia apart is its unique design and functionality. The vehicle is a two-seater car made with lightweight aluminum, measuring 1200 x 1330 x 2180. It runs on a single rotating sphere, providing exceptional maneuverability in tight urban spaces. The electric motor and power cell are housed inside the ball, resulting in a lower center of gravity and superior handling.

Metrotopia recharges automatically while docked inside its trams, ensuring a seamless and convenient experience for users. The controls of Metrotopia are similar to those of a normal car, making it easy for anyone to operate.

The project, which started in April 2010 and finished in March 2012, faced several challenges. The main objective was to design an integrated solution that would not require major redesign of the existing public transportation system while improving the travel experience for commuters. By working around the current infrastructure, Colabufalo was able to create a system that is relatively low-cost to set up.

Metrotopia's small footprint allows for great maneuverability in high-density living areas, making it an ideal solution for urban environments. Its ability to dock with specially designed trams enables users to cover long distances quickly and safely. This innovative system combines the freedom of a personal vehicle with the efficiency and speed of public transportation.

Metrotopia's unique design and functionality have been recognized and awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2013. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Metrotopia's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world by providing fulfillment and positive feelings to its users.
